On Marin Sun Farms we raise all of our cattle on pasture. We believe that animals raised in fresh air and sunshine with room to roam produce the highest quality, best tasting meats.

The Environment

The native pastures and rolling hills of West Marin are a perfect home for our livestock. The mild climate and rich soils support a variety of native grasses upon which our livestock feed as they develop into healthy mature beef. Grazing animals are critical to sustaining healthy and productive open spaces, as the grazing process itself contributes to the annual regeneration of many native grasses. Our cattle are raised on pasture their entire lives.

The Diet

Never confined, the livestock select their diet from the pastures as they graze. We believe that cattle raised on pasture are healthier than conventionally raised, confined, grain fed cattle. In addition to grass, and an organic mineral mix, our cattle are supplemented with hay and/or silage when the pasture nutrient density is low.

Our Cattle

The cattle are raised locally on ranches around Point Reyes Station, Marin County and on partner ranches, within the Bay Area Food-Shed, in Sonoma, Mendocino, and Humboldt counties. We only purchase cattle that are guaranteed to be free of synthetic hormones and antibiotics.
The following breeds have frequented our pastures and the pastures of our partners:

Angus

Hereford

Gelbvieh

Holstein

Short Horn

Red Angus

The Beef

You will find that our all natural, 100% grass-fed beef has a rich and robust flavor not found in conventional, confinement raised, grain fed beef. Studies have shown that the types of fats found in grass-fed meats are much healthier. Grass-fed beef contains fewer Omega-6 fatty acids, which are believed to be linked to many diseases of humanity, like heart disease and contains more of the healthy Omega-3 fatty acids as well as beta-carotene and CLA, another "good" fat.

Organic...?

We support and utilize organic farming methods but choose to not certify with the federal government. We use no herbicides or pesticides on our pastures and we are deeply committed to raising our cattle in a way that is environmentally beneficial and produces healthy food. As a relationship marketing company, we realize that it is the connection and transparency from production to plate that is most critical in upholding the highest level of integrity.

Supply Chain

MSF Hereford and Angus crossed cattle comprise the base herd, located at the Historic H, K, and AT&T Ranches within the Point Reyes National Seashore. The cattle are 100% grass fed and free of synthetic hormones and antibiotics. All cattle are slaughtered at either Rancho USDA facility in Petaluma or at Redwood Meats USDA facility in Eureka. The carcasses are transported to the F. Uri Meat Company USDA facility in San Francisco, dry aged, and butchered by MSF staff butchers for wholesale sales. Primal cuts destine for retail sale are then transported to the MSF butcher shop in Point Reyes Station for further fabrication, cutting and packaging.  MSF cattle are also raised in partnership with other local producers to fill in seasonal gaps in production and create a consistent supply.
